The United States men's national team's World Cup 2022 journey is over. They hadhigh hopes of making significant progress in Qatar after missing out on the 2018 tournament, but it wasn't to be.
The 2022 event was something of a chance for redemption following the disappointment of four years ago. The USMNT finished fifth in the final group stage of CONCACAF qualifying to lose out. Now, head coach Gregg Berhalter took his best 26 players to the Middle East with a mandate to seize the moment.
Led by Chelsea forward and national team talisman Christian Pulisic, the USMNT advanced to the knockout stages after a clutch 1-0 win over Iran on November 29.
Having drawn against Wales 1-1 in their opener, there were encouraging signs from their second match, a 0-0 draw that they dominated for long spells against heavyweights England.
Pulisic then proved to be the hero against Iran as he found the back of the net in the first-half and the USA managed to hold on a for a crucial victory.
But in the Round of 16 the USA missed chances, and were ultimately outclassed, as the Netherlands won 3-1 to move on to the quarterfinals.

USA 2022 World Cup schedule, results
The United States began its World Cup journey with potentially the most important match of the group stage, as the . The USA looked on course for three points after Tim Weah had given them a first-half lead before Gareth Bale converted from the penalty spot with eight minutes to go.
Next up was a massive game against England on Black Friday, November 25, which had Americans buzzing with hopes of capturing an enormous upset.
As it turned out, the game didn't necessarily live up to the hype. As 0-0 draws go, it was entertaining enough, but in the end it could have been more for the US.

It was a high-quality display from Berhalter's side, led by the midfield as Weston McKennie and Yunus Musah bossed the match. Pulisic pulled the strings up front, and rattled the crossbar with a laser-guided shot in the first half, but couldn't find a winner.
The United States then secured their spot in the Round of 16 with a narrow 1-0 win over Iran which meant they entered the knockout stages undefeated and full of confidence.
The Netherlands awaited the USA on Saturday, December 3, with the Dutch topping Group A after beating Qatar 2-0 in their final match.
The United States were always facing an uphill battle at the World Cup against the No. 8-ranked Netherlands, but it felt like they had a chance to see their way through to their second-ever quarterfinal berth.
Instead, they fell short, defeated 3-1 on goals from Memphis Depay, Daley Blind, and Denzel Dumfries.
