Olympics wrestling qualifying, explained: How the rules, bracket work at 2024 USA team trials | Sporting News (2024)

The United States has long been one of the powerhouses of Olympic wrestling.

Only the Soviet Union, with 62 gold medals, has more than the United States' 57 all-time golds. Since the dissolution of the USSR, Russia has 31 gold medals. But no country has more than the USA's 138 total medals.

LIVE: Updated bracket, results from 2024 USA Olympic wrestling team trials

And that dominance has not gone away in recent years. At the 2020 Summer Olympics, Japan and the Russian Olympic Committee had five and four gold medals, respectively, while the U.S. had three, third among all nations. The United States led all countries with nine total (two silver, four bronze).

From April 19-20, Team USA will determine who will be the latest wrestlers to represent the red, white and blue, this time in Paris for the 2024 Summer Olympics. Team USA will hold team trials at the Bryce Jordan Center at Penn State, with more than 200 wrestlers competing for the chance to compete for gold in the Olympics.

Once at the team trials, the rules are: You win, you move on. You lose, you're done.

There are brackets for each weight class, and wrestlers will compete in the bracket in single-elimination matchups to advance to the next round. Rankings within each class are determined include the USA Wrestling Performance Index, head-to-head results, outcomes against common opponents and national and international tournament placements.

The championship round is a best-of-three format, which means a wrestler would need to win twice in order to represent the U.S. in the Olympics.

Unlike many tournaments, many of the brackets already know at least one of the two participants. If a wrestler won a medal at the 2023 World Championships at an Olympic weight or reached the Pan American Olympic qualifier finals, they have already received a bye to the final round.

The U.S. Olympic team will be comprised of 18 athletes, one in each weight class per style. The U.S. has qualified in 13 of 18 total weight classes. All six women's freestyle weight classes have qualified, but Team USA has only qualified in four of six men's free style spots and three of six spots in Greco-Roman. Those last five spots can be earned in the World Qualification Tournament in May.
