How Does UserTesting Work?

There are 2 types of users on UserTesting:

  • Contributors
  • Customers

Here's how UserTesting works for each of those user types:

How UserTesting Works For Contributors

UserTesting contributors (i.e. testers) can earn money by participating in usability tests and live research interviews. Upon completion of a test, payments are automatically sent within 7 days.

Key Points 🔑

Work Type:Contract, Freelance
Income Type:Active
Work Schedule:Flexible
Workplace:Remote
Minimum Payout:$0.01
Payout Options:PayPal

Payments are sent automatically so there's no need to manually request a payout.

Payout Speed:7 days
Other Notes:Occasionally, at the end of a test, a researcher might offer you a bonus payment.
Pros:
  • Good pay. $15-$60 USD/hour is an extremely good average hourly rate.
  • Tests are fun and interesting. We've done tests for some well-known companies, which is really cool.
  • Weekly payments.
Cons:
  • Not a job replacement.
  • PayPal payments only.
  • You might not get accepted. If UserTesting already has enough testers from your country, they might decline your application.
Tips:
  • Don't lie on screeners. While this can be tempting, UserTesting will most likely find out and it could get you banned.
  • Fill out your profile fully, accurately, and keep it updated. This will help you receive more relevant testing opportunities.
  • Leave the dashboard open at all times. Some tests go very quickly but leaving your dashboard open will allow you to see them as soon as they're posted, giving you a better chance of qualifying.

Pros, cons, and tips are based on real UserTesting Contributor reviews.

Getting Started 🔢

To become a UserTesting participant, head over to the UserTesting website and look for the "get paid to test" link. From there, you'll need to submit your email and take a practice test.

The practice test will determine if you're accepted for real paid tests, so take it seriously. You may not get a chance to re-apply. If approved, you'll start receiving paid tests on your dashboard.

Earning Money 💵

There are two main methods of testing conducted on UserTesting.com:

  1. Live conversation tests. These involve connecting with a researcher face-to-face. They may ask you to test a website, app, or similar while live, or they may simply ask you questions.
  2. Unmoderated tests. These are done by yourself and involve recording your screen, voice, and (sometimes) face while going through a test. UserTesting provides its own software to do the recording, but you need to have the equipment.
  3. Diary studies. These can contain any of the above test methods, but instead of being a one-off sort of deal, they involve multiple tests/activities over a number of days.

With all of these test methods, you'll come across multiple different types of tests. Most involve using a website or app while following a specific set of tasks and speaking your thoughts out loud. Very rarely, you may be asked to test physical products as well, which will be shipped to your house.

Before you take a test, you'll be able to see its estimated length, how much it pays, and which device it needs to be conducted on. You'll then need to take a short screener (usually a few multiple-choice questions) to see if you qualify for the test. If you do qualify, you can start the test right away (if it's unmoderated) or get your live interview time and date set up.

Completed tests typically pay anywhere from $4-$120 each depending on their complexity and length.

After you complete a test, you may also receive a rating (out of 5) from the client. Users with lower ratings will have fewer future test opportunities, so be as helpful as possible during every test you take, and don't lie to qualify. If you submit an extremely poorly done test, your payment may be canceled, but this is rare.

Cashing Out 💰

Once you have at least $0.01 in your balance, you can cash out your UserTesting earnings via PayPal.

After cashing out, you can expect to receive your UserTesting payout in 7 days.

Tip: Read our UserTesting Earning Guide to learn more about making money on the platform.

Payment Options:Invoice
Pros:
  • Offers a free trial to get started.
  • Nicely designed platform.
  • Lots of options when it comes to customizing the test you want to create.
Cons:
  • Seems to be more geared toward large enterprise companies rather than small businesses. Can be expensive.
  • If your test demographic is very niche, it can take time to find enough testers.

Getting Started 🔢

If you're looking to test a website, app, prototype, or something else, UserTesting offers a free trial for new customers and they make it easy to get started. All you have to do is head over to the platform's website and look for the "Request trial" link. From there, you'll need to provide your full name, job title, phone number, and email. Then, someone from UserTesting will reach out directly.

Conducting Research 💼

When you're ready to set up a test, you can use UserTesting's on-site tools to get something created in a few minutes, or you can get help from their research team for more complex studies. For a really quick setup, you can use one of their pre-made templates.

Tests can be self-guided or live interview style and can include all sorts of specific tasks and questions. The platform offers quite a lot of customization.

When you're ready to distribute your test, you can either bring in your own audience or you can target UserTesting contributors from specific demographics.

Once your test is distributed, you'll start receiving results in as little as an hour. You can then watch the feedback, annotate it, and share it with colleagues if needed. If you're unsatisfied with a test that you receive, you can request to have it replaced with a new one at no extra cost.

Pricing 🏷️

UserTesting plans vary in pricing depending on company size, features, and more. To receive a quote you'll need to reach out to the platform directly.

Based on user reviews and estimates, pricing seems to be annual and starts at around $10k-$15k.

Is UserTesting Legit?

We believe UserTesting is legit. Founded in 2007, the platform has been delivering services to clients and paying contributors/testers for a long time now. On top of this, the company is very transparent about how the platform works, is active on social media, and has a great founder story behind it...

According to Crunchase, Darrel Benatar (one of the co-founders of UserTesting), said the idea for UserTesting.com came about when he saw his co-worker Dave Garr doing usability testing on his businesses website, Suprise.com. After seeing its effectiveness, Darrel and Dave started UserTesting.com together to make usability testing easy for other designers and website owners.

Nowadays, UserTesting.com is one of the most popular usability testing platforms in the world, working with clients like Walmart, Dominos, Facebook, lululemon, and more. It's also a publicly listed company on the New York Stock Exchange.

Overall, we have no reason to believe UserTesting could be a scam.

Is UserTesting Worth It for Contributors? Is It a Good Way to Make Money?

UserTesting offers a steady stream of work and great hourly rates for website/app usability testers. However, it's not perfect: support can be hard to reach and unhelpful at times and qualifying for tests can be difficult. Still, it's worth trying out if you're looking to make some extra cash online in your spare time.

Earner Rating:

Rated 3.38 out of 5

3.4/5

What's This?

×

This is our carefully calculated editorial Earner/Saver Rating. This rating gives you an idea of how strong a platform's earning/savings potential is. It's calculated as a weighted average based on safety, earning/savings potential, support quality, and more, with earning/savings potential holding the most weight. Learn more about our editorial review process.

Safety: 4/5

Is UserTesting safe for Contributors?

UserTesting requires you to share some personal information and demographic information, and you need to download a screen recorder, but there are no extreme security concerns here. You can delete your account at any time and, based on the platform's privacy policy, they seem to have reasonable data storage and sharing practices.

Support Quality: 3/5

Does UserTesting offer good support for Contributors?

In our experience, the UserTesting support team is responsive and polite. They responded within 48 hours. Besides human support, the platform also has helpful resources on-site for smaller issues.

This being said, when reading user reviews, it seems the support quality on UserTesting is a hit or miss. If you have a more complicated issue, you may receive a response much more slowly (or, in some cases, not at all). And, even when receiving a response, you might not get anything very helpful.

Earning Potential: 2.5/5

Is UserTesting a good way to make money?

Assuming you qualify for a test every 20 screeners and each screener takes you 1 minute each on average, you can expect to earn at least $15/hour, most likely more. However, receiving and qualifying for tests can be unpredictable, so this earning potential can vary a lot.

Payout Minimum: 4.5/5

How much do you need to earn before being able to cash out?

UserTesting has a minimum payout of $0.01.

Payout Speed: 3.5/5

How quickly does UserTesting send payouts after you cash out?

Overall, based on our data, you can expect to get paid in 7 days.

Ease Of Entry: 4/5

How hard is it to start earning money with UserTesting?

There's a tiny learning curve to being a UserTesting tester, but it's still very easy to learn how to use and start earning. Usability testing in general is all about your opinions, so there are no wrong answers.

Commissions / Fees: 5/5

Does UserTesting charge Contributors any commissions or fees?

UserTesting has no fees for contributors.

User Experience: 4/5

How is the overall user experience for UserTesting Contributors?

UserTesting offers a good user experience. The platform has a ton of helpful information for testers, it's easy to use, and it delivers on what it promises. There are occasional bugs when using UserTesting's testing software, but that's about it.
