s9 Bumper Sensor’s Error 9 Fix

by ymyplace2 » March 31st, 2020, 2:36 pm

New s9 but a second owner so no iRobot warranty.
Problem
s9 when docked s9 will back out of the dock and do a few back wards turns and then stop. Then gives me a Error 9 warning. s9 Bumper Sensor’s Error 9 Fix • Robot Reviews (2)
Manual stuff s9 Bumper Sensor’s Error 9 Fix • Robot Reviews (3)
Error nine (9) means your s Series Roomba bumper is stuck and is not moving freely. Your robot may exhibit behavior such as backing up or spinning in an unexpected manner. Briskly tap the bumper several times to dislodge any debris that may be trapped underneath, and then press CLEAN to restart. Tried this no Luck.
Now
It is a new s9 and there is no debris. Error is due to a faulty sensor and on my 500s 600 and 700s I have fixed IR transmitter and receiver failed components. s9 Bumper Sensor’s Error 9 Fix • Robot Reviews (4)
Problems to Fix
I need to do a s9 Disassembly and get at and replace the bumper sensor’s IR components
but
I do not know how to disassemble the s9 bumper.
Question s9 Bumper Sensor’s Error 9 Fix • Robot Reviews (5)
How do I disassemble the s9 bumper to get at the s9 bumper sensor’s IR components?

Got It!
s9 Disassembly Tear Down
Remove 2 screws on the top round cap at the clear base hinge
Remove various screws on the bottom
The s9 top is plastic clipped in part.
To detach or unfasten s9 top:
Un clip and tape the RH flip sensor to the bottom of the case to make sure during the dis assembly you do not crack that sensor mount.
Started at s9 top Fwd end is easy just push back and un clip and remove button plug
Aft s9 top is clipped in at the top of the dust bin hole and the bottom aft perimeter. To un clip the s9 top push on dust bin hole walls and pull up on the top. To un clip the s9 top bottom perimeter wedge in thin metal shims around the entire perimeter and pull up on the top. The s9 top should slide up and off.
Just pull up and the clipped in s9 top comes off.
So
With a small flat very thin metal pry scraper 2in long (I used a lock rake) A little wedging pulling and prying the top pops up and off.
Again
I started from the fwd end and worked to the back.
Once the top is off this exposes everything the bumper and Mother board. Everything.
Vac Motor is easily removed 2 screws and a plug.
Wheels are easily removed Clipped in at bottom you just push in to release the wheel (roomba has a vid for that)
Battery is easily removed 1 screw and pull (roomba has a vid for that)
Design is simple and lower cost and easier to dis assemble than the i7 or 960 or 980 or any of the older round Roombs In time the s9 should be lower cost to build and buy than any of the previous Roomba.
I guess roomba has to amortize all the engineering cost on the first design and get down the cost of new smaller circuit boards and lower part count. I bet in 1-2 years the new generation roomba will be 100-200$ per copy.
IMO
s9 is not a cheep but lower cost design and 300% better than the old round roombas. Ok s9 may have software and hardware glitches that crop up with customer use but the s9 is the robot vac of the future.

s9 is HECB and magentics No IR bumper sensors

by ymyplace2 » April 4th, 2020, 1:17 pm

FYI
On the s9 iRobot got rid of the IR trans and receivers and use magnets and Hall effect circuit boards (HECB). Two hall effect sensors in the front under the bumper and 2 HECB on the left and right side of the bumper. The HECBs are the current technology with surface mount technology. Still repairable but small surface mount ICs.
Fix
In my case the HECB were fine and IMO HECB and magnets are more robust and lower cost. My s9 problem is the left HECB was not aligned the with the magnet north pole (end of magnet). So to inspect and fix this all I had to do is unscrew the HECB holder and view the magnets position.
Again Fix
s9 would have been super simple just remove the bottom plate and the carriage assembly. Then unscrew the HECB holder and re align the magnetic.
I did not have to remove the top cover I did not have to remove the dust bin. I did not have to remove the dust bin cover. I did not have to remove the bumper. I did not have to remove the battery I did not have to remove the wheels. I did not have to remove the blower motor.
Simple Simple Fix. s9 Bumper Sensor’s Error 9 Fix • Robot Reviews (12)
Only thing I got out of this is how to completely disassemble the s9

Do you have any HECB photo to share?
I did a search on eBay and cannot find any on sale.
Just interested in seeing it.

Done
It is hard to get macro shots s9 Bumper Sensor’s Error 9 Fix • Robot Reviews (17) but this is the general idea of magnets and HECBs. s9 Bumper Sensor’s Error 9 Fix • Robot Reviews (18) The HECB are smaller than a postage stamp and the wires are hair thin. Magnets are the white rectangles.
HECB: 4493591 Rev. A 94V-0 and looks like a 1M12 IC do not know about the surface mount resistor or cap.
Again
To fix my s9 all I had to do is move the magnet and re attach. s9 Bumper Sensor’s Error 9 Fix • Robot Reviews (19)

Thank you for the photos.

You said in previous post "I did not have to remove the battery".
Since the HECB is not enclosed, I will remove the battery first before doing the adjustment. Just an extra safety step that I will take to ensure that I do not damage the HECB as it is not available on eBay yet.

Yes
Bumper s9 is easy removal.
Remove two HECB mounts. Then there is one plug that has to be removed before you can pull the bumper forward and off. The plug wires have a little hot melt glue on them. Even with glued plug wires s9 bumper is super easy s9 bumper Removal
Old round iRobots have tons of screws to remove to get at the top and then bumper screws.
This is why the s9 and future iRobot derivatives should be lower cost.

s9 HECB sensor Magnets
One side of the magnets are painted white (see photo)
3 Magnets and 3 HECBs 1 RH 1 LH 1 Center. You can see and test the magnets with any steel tool. Look at all 3 magnets and see how each is mounted to determine if one is loose or miss aligned.

Yes my two s9 work
Well
One works one is having battery problems and due to iRobot not selling s9 batteries well I am SOL.

A bit more on disassembly of the Roomba S9. Since there seems to be very little out there on this.

1. Remove the 2 screws in the hinge holding the lid on the top of the Roomba.
2. Remove the 4 screws holding the extractor tray in the bottom of the Roomba. Lift out the extractor tray after removing the extractors.
3. Remove the 4 screws holding the bottom plate on.
4. You can now remove the wheel assemblies by pressing in the button in the dust bin area that holds the wheel. Lift them out.
5. Remove the 1 screw holding the battery. Lift it out.
6. Remove the top cover. First lift up on the forward edge upwards to release the clips holding it on. This will release the top part of the cover to the edge of the bumper. Remove the wire connector to the button panel under the cover. Lift up around the dust bin area on the cover to release from those clips. Now the tricky part. The cover extends all the way to the bottom on the back half of the Roomba. This is also held on by clips. Start on one side and pry the cover away from the bottom of the Roomba. Go around the entire chassis and lift off the cover.
7. Remove the front bumper. Remove the 7 screws (5 front and 2 closer to the bin). Now the bumper can be removed by prying the two flat clips that hold the bumper from extending. Those are located on the bottom near the front. Now pry the right side of the bumper outwards from the back of the body. The Hall sensor extends into the body and you must clear that to remove the bumper. Move forwards to complete. Now pry the left side of the bumper outwards from the back and the bumper should be free. Unplug the sensor wire from the board.

Hope this helps.

Re: s9 Bumper Sensor’s Error 9 Fix

I had taken apart the Roomba S9 to troubleshoot the Error 31 - internal communication error.

The error always happened while or immediately after the Roomba bumped into an obstacle. I also noticed that the bumper has only a little resistance and could stick closed instead of returning out to the open position.

After removing the bumper I bent the 4 springs outward an additional 1/2 inch (12 mm). Be very very VERY careful of the side springs - they will break off the body. They are heat welded and its really a poor design.

I put the Roomba back together and voila I was able to have the vacuum clean an entire 2 cycles - about 2.5 hours - without any error. This is compared to before - when the Roomba averaged about 10 minutes before puking out an Error 31.

A prior message discussed aligning the Hall effect sensors and magnets. First of all the magnets are not able to be moved. The sensors also can't be moved - and if they are over the magnet they really don't need to be moved. A quick read on Hall effect sensors will teach you why. Check that the magnets are there - and I brushed off any dust off them.

Hope this helps your Error 31 message. (Be careful of the side springs.)

I had Error 9 twice. I had Error 31 about 30 times in the 5 hours run time before the spring bending.

Since I pushed the springs out, the Roomba has run nearly 10 hours with no errors.

I question Roomba's packaging the box has a handle and if stored (and transported with the handle vertical, the entire weight of Roomba is on the front bumper. The springs are probably compressed during shipping/storage.

I would guess that the Roomba's bumper would compress with 1 lb (500 gram) weight before I bent the springs. I guess now it takes 4 lbs (2000 gram) to compress the bumper now.

Current run is 4 hours and 51 minutes - no errors.
