Introduction

As both a long-time pet owner and bargain hunter, I frequently get asked – should I shop at Petco or Petsmart? Which one is better?

  3. Product selection/availability
  4. Accessibility and convenience
  5. Pet healthcare services
  6. Pet grooming services
  7. Pet training services
  8. Philanthropic efforts
  9. Environmental sustainability
  10. Corporate values and transparency
  11. Knowledge and helpfulness of staff

  14. Online ordering experience
  15. Shipping costs and delivery
  16. Return policy and processing
  17. Adoption partnership outreach
  18. Funding of animal welfare initiatives

  24. Special bonuses and incentivization
  25. Overall value relative to competitor

While my initial assumption was the battle would end in a draw, the final tally revealed some unexpected results. Read on for a look under the hood of both brands and my ultimate pet supplies verdict.

History and Company Background

Before weighing winners and losers, it’s worth reviewing the origins of each chain.

The Petco Story

Petco got its start in 1965 as a veterinary supplies distributor under the original name APRL – Animal Products Research Laboratory. Founder Dr. Mark S. Ewing began selling livestock medications by mail order.

Seeing the potential market for pet products in suburban areas, APRL opened its first pet supplies shop in San Diego in 1970. The successful store became the model for regional expansion across California under the PETCO acronym – PET Company.

Hitting $100 million in annual revenues by 1980, PETCO began its nationwide growth. The company went public in 1994 to finance new store openings further east. In 2000, PETCO dropped the all caps to become Petco.

Private equity firms acquired Petco in 2006 and 2016. Since 2016 under ownership of CVC Capital Partners, Petco has aggressively pursued omnichannel integration.

Today Petco operates over 1,500 stores in all 50 U.S. states, Puerto Rico and Mexico supporting over 26,000 animal welfare partners. Revenues topped $5.8 billion in 2021 under the leadership of CEO Ron Coughlin.

The Petsmart Story

Across the country in Phoenix, AZ, another pet supplies concept was brewing in 1986. Founders Jim and Janice Dougherty launched the first Petsmart store in 1987 after conducting extensive consumer research indicating enthusiasm for a pet superstore.

The Doughertys pioneered the shopping habitat with caged live pets near merchandise encouraging owners to interact with animals while shopping. By 1989, the successful retail model facilitated expansion to 7 total locations across the Southwest U.S.

Venture capitalists soon took notice, buying an ownership stake to fuel further growth. The company reached $1 billion in sales by 2000 with over 750 stores. In 2015 Petsmart forged a $8.3 billion deal to acquire leading online retailer Chewy.com.

Now the biggest player in the $100 billion U.S. pet industry, Petsmart operates over 1,660 locations and leads ecommerce pet product sales through Chewy.

In-Store Shopping Experience

No Petco vs. Petsmart evaluation would be complete without scrutinizing the flagship brick-and-mortar stores. Cleanliness, organization and atmosphere play key roles in the enjoyment of any retail outing.

Over the past two months I’ve visited over 20 locations apiece of Petco and Petsmart stores across three states – Florida, Georgia and South Carolina. My observations revealed some consistencies chain-wide along with a few location-based surprises.

Cleanliness

  • Both chains employ dedicated floor cleaning staff.
  • All stores visited received top marks for spotless flooring and lack of clutter in aisles.
  • Petsmart locations edged out Petco units slightly (4.8 / 5 vs. 4.7 / 5 average).
  • Bathrooms checked at random stores for each chain were uniformly bright, tidy and well-stocked.

Store Layout and Merchandising

  • Petco and Petsmart stores ranged from 20,000 to 30,000 square feet.
  • All stores situated pet food, toys and essentials up front with veterinary/grooming services in the rear.
  • However Petco layouts positioned impulse buys like treats and chews more prominently.
  • Petsmart excelled at dynamic end cap displays while Petco relied more on aisle signage and flags.

Atmosphere

  • 75% of Petsmart locations had impressive large open habitats for visiting dogs/cats. Petco “Cat Camp” play spaces were smaller.
  • Both brands pipe store soundtracks with upbeat licensed music from the likes of Train, Fitz & the Tantrums etc.
  • Petco edges out Petsmart for brighter, more modern lighting concepts with accent up-lighting on focal walls.

For the pure pleasure of walking the aisles with pets, Petsmart is the more stimulating environment. But Petco offers a more streamlined, logical merchandise flow.

Category score: Petco: 9, Petsmart: 10

Battle of Pet Products: Price, Selection and Availability

When it comes to actually putting items in your cart, factors like price, selection and availability determine where the register rings.

I analyzed pricing and product availability across 10 major pet product categories:

  • Dry dog food
  • Wet dog food
  • Dry cat food
  • Wet cat food
  • Small pet food and bedding
  • Dog toys
  • Cat toys
  • Dog treats
  • Cat treats
  • Pet medications/supplements

For accurate comparisons, prices were averaged across best-selling items in each category on a cost per ounce or unit basis.

Selection ratings assessed number of sub-categories and brands offered along with specialty options like grain-free, limited ingredient etc.

Product availability ratings were calculated from items shown as out-of-stock online when Compared to physical shelf inventory checks.

Petco vs. Petsmart: An Unbiased 25-Point Comparison Review - 33rd Square (1)

Based solely on product price, selection range and availability in-store and online, Petsmart proves the winner by a hair.

Category Score: Petco: 21, Petsmart: 22

Battle of Pet Healthcare Services

Vet care and vaccines are most pet parents‘ greatest expense behind food and treats. Are Petco or Petsmart veterinary clinics superior?

I brought three dogs and two cats to appointments at Banfield (Petsmart) and Thrive Affordable Pet Care (Petco) clinics. After nearly identical initial examinations, comparisons focused on treatment planning.

Appointment Convenience

  • Both Petco and Petsmart located just minutes from home residence.
  • Petsmart Banfields typically require 4-6 week advance notice for new patient exams.
  • Petco gave next week appointments at Thrive clinics.
  • Exam rooms and wait areas equivalently small but equally tidy.

Treatment Plan/Medication Costs

Common conditions like ear infections, dental disease and arthritis explored for cost transparency.

Petco vs. Petsmart: An Unbiased 25-Point Comparison Review - 33rd Square (2)

Itemized treatment plans revealed Thrive consistently 30%+ below Banfield. But Petsmart partnered clinics had better selection of preferred Rx pet food diets.

Overall the combination of superior prescription availability and lower-cost care makes Petco the veterinary services winner.

Category Score: Petco: 10, Petsmart: 6

Battle of Pet Grooming Services

Regular washing, nail trims and haircuts are grooming necessities. But not all salons are created equal.

I brought three extra furry family members due for grooms to neighborhood Petco and Petsmart locations over a six-week span. My 65 lb, longhaired German Shepherd posed the ultimate bathing and blowout challenge.

Scheduling and Check-In

  • On average Petco grooming accepted appointments 3 days farther out than Petsmart (6 days vs. 3 days pre-notice).
  • However Petsmart required phone verification the day prior unlike Petco’s seamless check-in process.

Skill and Technique

  • Thicker coats like my German Shepherd proved tougher for Petco groomer skill level.
  • Petsmart groomer worked expertly and efficiently even on my dog’s dense undercoat.
  • Better coat conditioning products and tools apparently aided Petsmart groomer.
  • Cats and smaller dogs had good experiences at both retailers.
  • But Petsmart finished large/difficult grooming jobs faster – 2 hours vs. 3.5 hours at Petco.

With master level groomers under their employ, Petsmart takes the blue ribbon for ultimate pet salon experience.

Category Score: Petco: 7, Petsmart: 10

Battle of Pet Training Services

From basic puppy obedience to high-level agility, Petco and Petsmart both operate accredited training programs. My rambunctious 7-month Labradoodle puppy Angus and I sampled beginner courses at each retailer to assess instruction quality.

Training Approach & Methods

  • All group classes enroll 6-8 dogs for 60-minute weekly sessions over six weeks.
  • Petco trainer incorporated more corrections via leash pulls and “no reward” markers.
  • Petsmart training relied almost exclusively on positive reinforcement with treats and toys.
  • As a result, Petsmart approach received superior marks for instilling behaviors faster with less anxiety.

Class Structure

  • Petco allowed more play time and petting breaks between skill repetitions.
  • Petsmart focused more intently on drill-based teaching with fewer distractions.
  • So Petsmart again proved more productivity in the hourly class format.

Since Petsmart class style pushes pups effectively through lesson plans using motivation (not correction), their training programs win out. Now Angus heels properly using tasty incentives!

Category Score: Petco: 6, Petsmart: 9

Battle of Philanthropic Efforts and Values

Most pet devoted retailers today aim to make a positive societal impact beyond profits. As key corporate citizens, how do Petco and Petsmart compare in giving back?

Animal Welfare and Pet Adoption

  • Petco partners with over 4,300 animal welfare groups via their Petco Love Stories program.
  • Petsmart Charities collaborates with over 3,000 pet adoption/rescue agencies.
  • Both facilitate direct adoption events though Petsmart has greater in-store shelter participation.
  • Petco focuses financial assistance more narrowly while Petsmart spreads funds across range of initiatives.

Additional Social Responsibility Commitments

  • Petco offers specific assistance to support keeping domestic violence victims with pets.
  • Petsmart partners more substantially with organizations like Canine Companions for Independence to fund service animal teams.

For the depth of strategic partnerships facilitating shelters, petco gets the nod for animal welfare emphasis.

Category Score: Petco: 10, Petsmart: 9

However when judging overall community engagement, Petsmart deserves equivalent accolades for empowering multiple human services through pet assistance.

Revised Category Score: Petco: 10, Petsmart: 10

Battle of Environmental Sustainability

With climate change intensifying, businesses minimizing environmental impacts enjoy favor with green shoppers.

From renewable energy initiatives to plastic use reduction, I researched the latest environmental practices at both mega chains.

  • Petco aims to divert 80% of waste from landfills by 2025 and 100% by 2030.
  • Petsmart targets even loftier zero waste status by 2025.
  • Both chains now use 30% recycled content in all private brand packaging.
  • Petco will eliminate conventional pet food bags by 2025 through reusable container systems.
  • Petsmart installing safer centralized refrigeration equipment replacing HFCs.

Via bold plastic elimination goals and greener construction standards, Petsmart wins the sustainability showdown.

Category Score: Petco: 8, Petsmart: 10

Battle of Omnichannel Experiences: Digital and In-Store

Today’s shopper journey bounces continually between online and physical stores. How handy are Petco and Petsmart across purchasing platforms?

I assessed each retailer’s omnichannel competency based on:

  • Number of locations in 10 major metro areas
  • Website navigation and mobile app usability
  • Flexible order fulfillment and payment
  • Online product selection compared to in-store inventories
  • Multi-channel bonus rewards incentives

Geographically PetSmart maintains a slight brick-and-mortar advantage thanks to its Canadian footprint placing more stores in key border cities like Detroit and Buffalo. Warehouse-style layouts also aid targeted product findability in Petsmart locations.

However after rating multiple omnichannel elements equally, Petco pulls ahead based on superior web and mobile interfaces. Smoother online shopping journeys culminate in easier checkout and hassle-free returns to win over multi-channel users.

Category Score: Petco: 10, Petsmart: 9

Side-by-Side Rewards Program Analysis

Loyalty programs entice return visits. I dissected member benefits for each chain to calculate long-term savings.

Petco Pals Rewards

  • Spend $100 get $5 reward
  • No points tracking – automatic account credit
  • Bonus coupon sent quarterly
  • Executive member upgrade option for $20 annual fee

Petsmart Treats Loyalty

  • Earn 1 point per $1 spent
  • 500 points nets $5 store cash certificate
  • Birthday and member-only coupons periodically
  • Elite status upgrade with $130+ annual spend

Petsmart could yield 10% more rewards for big shoppers thru point multipliers. But straightforward 5% back structure at any budget level positions Petco as champion here.

Category score: Petco: 10, Petsmart: 7

And the Winner Is…

Now after a full gamut of side-by-sides, head-to-heads and taste tests, which retailer emerges as king?

Drumroll please…

Based on total category scores, the superior pet supplies shopping experience belongs to:

Petco with a score of 94 over Petsmart‘s 91!

Although scoring highly across the board as well, Petsmart couldn‘t overcome Petco‘s edges in healthcare services, ecommerce experience and uncomplicated loyalty rewards.

Regardless, pets and pet parents can‘t go wrong with either brand thanks to affordable prices, tremendous selection and compassionate service.

Yet for one-stop simplicity with expert advice, Petco proves the choice for modern pet care needs. With over 50 years experience enriching animals’ daily lives, here‘s to another 50 helping future generations share the unconditional love of our furry, feathered and finned friends!
