Lovesac Sactional Review: This Is the Last Couch I Will Ever Buy (1)KATIE BANDURSKI/FAMILY HANDYMAN

Throughout college and early adulthood, my partner and I never got too attached to our furniture. After all, we were moving a lot. We bounced from apartment to apartment—never quite sure where we would settle down. And, thanks to the budget-friendly buys we were scoring from IKEA or Facebook Marketplace, it often made more sense to replace a piece rather than pay to move it.

That all changed when we bought our first house last September. We now have a permanent spot to call home, and I’m eager to fill it with furniture we’ll love forever. (Or, at least, for a very long time!)

At the top of my list? A Lovesac Sactional. I was influenced on Instagram by the modular setup—especially since I love to rearrange my space. But is this cozy couch really worth the price? I tested it to find out.

What is a Lovesac Sactional?

You may be familiar with LoveSac from their flagship product, the oh-so-cozy Sac bean bag chair. But in 2006, the brand started selling couches, AKA Sactionals. These modular sofas put you in a designer driver’s seat, offering customization on everything from fabric type to fill. Plus, unlike a traditional couch that’s a set size, each seat and side is its own entity, allowing you to create a configuration that’s entirely your own.

Lovesac Sactional

This modular, customizable couch is perfect for pets and busy families. Plus, it's built to last a lifetime!

Lovesac Sactional Features

  • Endless configurations to choose from with any number of seats and sides
  • 5 side styles (standard, deep, angled, deep angled or rolled)
  • 3 seat styles (standard, wedge or storage)
  • 30 quick-ship covers and 129 custom options
  • 2 cushion fill options (standard foam or luxurious Lovesoft)
  • Plenty of add-ons and accessories, including:
    • Power Hub for charging devices right in the couch
    • Built-in speakers for immersive sound
    • Drink holders and coasters that fit over a side
    • Table that fits over a seat

How We Tested It

I’ve been testing my Lovesac Sactional since January 2024. My configuration included five standard seats, one storage seat, five standard sides, two angled sides and one deep side. I chose the seashell polylinen cover and opted for a standard foam fill. I did not add on any StealthTech technology, but I did opt for a Sactionals table.

Ordering

Lovesac’s online ordering system is unlike anything I’ve seen before. It allows you to customize every inch of your new couch. They have a building tool that lets you play around with endless configurations for your space.

I got started by measuring my living room. I knew I wanted a couch that didn’t overhang the entryway wall and didn’t block the built-in cabinet doors. Since this space’s primary uses are reading and entertaining, I also wanted a conversational setup rather than a pit-style sofa for movie nights.

With these needs in mind, I started building my dream couch. I didn’t love any of Lovesac’s popular setups, so I switched over to the create-your-own tab to really get custom. The tool is very intuitive. I could add, delete, rotate and move sides or seats with ease.

Once I was happy with the layout, I moved on to the hardest part: Choosing a cover! At the time of ordering, Lovesac had 30 quick-ship options in boucle, velvet, chenille, crossweave, weave, polylinen, leather and reversible fabrics. If that’s not enough, they also offer over 120 custom covers, ranging from a zany zebra-print velvet to super-soft “phur.” Keep in mind custom covers are not returnable. And, if you’re having trouble deciding, you can select five free swatches or head to one of the brand’s retail locations for in-person viewing.

After a lot of back-and-forth—and stalking the brand’s Instagram page for examples—I landed on the seashell polylinen. In person, this fabric is the perfect neutral. It’s not starkly white but offers a creaminess that matches the bone-colored stone in my fireplace.

I finalized my ‘sac by opting for a storage seat (hello, stash for extra pillows and blankets!) and a standard fill. I also added a Sactionals table so we’d have a spot to put drinks and phones. As I said, this sofa will primarily be used for conversations and quiet time, so I didn’t need the StealthTech built-in speaker or charging options. But if I ever change my mind or move the couch to a different room, it’s easy to add on in the future.

Unboxing

Lovesac Sactional Review: This Is the Last Couch I Will Ever Buy (3)Katie Bandurski/Family Handyman

I got a shipping notification five days after placing my order. This couch was coming in 21 packages! I cleared some space and got ready for an influx of boxes.

A large chunk arrived on Friday, one came on Sunday, a few more came on Monday, the last batch arrived on Tuesday and the final box came on Wednesday. As a somewhat impatient person, it was a little annoying waiting for the boxes to come in waves; I was expecting they would all come on the same day. All things considered, this was a very minor inconvenience—I was happy that my order arrived accurately and without damage.

I also loved that Sactionals are shipped with recycling in mind. Cardboard inserts (rather than Styrofoam) protect each piece. And everything from the box to the tension rods holding the cushions in place are recyclable. The only waste came from the plastic bags, which I can still recycle, just not in my curbside pick-up bin.

Assembly

Lovesac Sactional Review: This Is the Last Couch I Will Ever Buy (4)Katie Bandurski/Family Handyman

You might be asking, “For the price, I really have to spend time assembling this thing, too?” It’s a valid concern, especially because Sactionals are one of the pricier modular couches on the market.

However, I found that the flat-pack style makes this couch even more appealing because it ensures a perfect fit, even in small spaces. When my husband and I ordered a sofa for our media room, we had to take the door off mid-delivery and squeeze the pieces in with nary an inch to spare. There are many types of furniture we couldn’t even try to fit up our stairway or down into the basem*nt thanks to tight corners and low ceilings. While a bit annoying, I appreciate that the Lovesac couch is easy to maneuver.

Now, onto assembly. I won’t lie and say this is the most fun thing to put together. It’s bulky, some pieces are heavy and there are a lot of steps. But it is very monotonous. Unlike other flat-pack furniture where if you miss one screw or divert one detail the whole piece is at risk of failing, Sactionals are simple. You end up doing a lot of steps over and over.

All in, I spent over six hours assembling and arranging my couch. I did do it by myself, but I would strongly recommend a helper.

Lovesac Sactional Review: This Is the Last Couch I Will Ever Buy (5)Katie Bandurski/Family Handyman

I split my tasks into three, two-hour sections. For the first batch of building, I unboxed most of the pieces, built and covered three seats, covered two angled side pillows and broke down the boxes. For the second batch, I built and covered two seats, built and covered five sides and unboxed two sides. And, for the final round, I built and covered two angled sides, built and covered the storage seat and started arranging.

I love that the instructions for each piece come printed on the side of the box—no extra paper here! You can also consult the brand’s website for additional pointers, but I didn’t find that necessary. For the seats, you’re mainly screwing on the feet and covering the seat base, cushion and pillow. For the sides, it’s the same thing. Screw on the feet and add the cover.

The covers are a little tight fresh out of the box. Putting them on is a bit like a fitted sheet. You need to line up the corner just so for it to go on properly. This is the step where a second set of hands is helpful to wrangle them into place. While a tad annoying, the tight covers give the couch a sleek, high-end look. After all, no one wants a saggy couch!

Arranging

Lovesac Sactional Review: This Is the Last Couch I Will Ever Buy (6)Katie Bandurski/Family Handyman

Once all of my pieces were built, it was on to the fun part: Arranging! I strongly suggest heading back to the online building tool to revisit your desired configuration. I took a screenshot and referenced it on my phone several times to remind myself which way the seats should go and where I wanted the angled sides. You can also use the seat cushions to get a feel for how the layout looks in your space.

Lovesac couches connect with shoes and clamps. The shoes are wooden boards with four perfectly sized holes that fit the feet of seats and sides. You use a shoe to connect pieces together. For example, in the back corner of the couch, I laid down a shoe to connect one foot of the seat, one foot of the angled side and one foot of the back. Every piece comes with a shoe, so you have plenty to go around. There are also included felt pads you can put on the shoes to protect hardwood floors. The clamps provide even more stability, hooking on to where a seat meets a side, back or other seat.

To start arranging, I placed all my seats in the desired location, then added my shoes. I gently lifted each piece and dropped it into place. Then, I added the sides and backs, placing a leg from each piece into a shoe. Finally, I added my clamps. A few went in very easily, while others took more effort. Like the covers, I imagine the clamps will start to loosen a bit with wear and reconfigurations.

Lounging

After all that work, I was ready for a nap—and boy, was this couch worth the effort. Sinking onto a Lovesac couch is like laying on a sturdy cloud. You don’t sink all the way down, but rather you’re effortlessly supported. It’s truly one of the comfiest couches I’ve experienced.

In the weeks to come, I sat, laid down and even slept through the night on the Sactional. It is my go-to spot in the house for curling up with a good book or chatting with loved ones.

Cleaning

Lovesac Sactional Review: This Is the Last Couch I Will Ever Buy (8)Katie Bandurski/Family Handyman

I’ve always wanted a light colored couch. But before Sactionals, I just couldn’t commit. Red wine, coffee, denim dye—there are just too many stain possibilities, even with the best couch cleaning tips. My husband and I are also hoping to get a dog soon, and muddy paw prints don’t typically mix well with white fabrics. Knowing that every inch of this couch is washable really eases my mind.

Luckily, we haven’t had any spills yet. But for the sake of this Lovesac Sactionals review, I poured chocolate, coffee and tomato sauce on one of the cushions. I let the stains set for a few minutes, then tossed in the washing machine on cold. After the cycle, I laid it out to air dry. The next day, when I went to put the cover back on, I was very impressed. I couldn’t see traces of the stain at all. I couldn’t even tell which side I had experimented on!

Keep in mind, some Lovesac fabrics are easier to clean than others. In fact, the brand recommends which covers are particularly family- or pet- friendly. Select fabrics, like the leather, are spot-clean only.
