  2. Croatia held to goalless draw by Morocco

    Morocco 0-0 Croatia

Croatia, runners-up four years ago, started their World Cup campaign with a goalless draw against a well-drilled Morocco at Al Bayt Stadium.

Only four players from their final defeat by France in 2018 started this game and they lacked an attacking spark throughout, but came closest through Nikola Vlasic's toe-poked effort.

Morocco were impressive, but failed to create clear-cut opportunities.

The best chance of a match that had only two shots on target from each side came in first-half stoppage time, when a left-wing cross was diverted towards goal by Vlasic, but the midfielder on loan at Torino from West Ham was denied by the right leg of Yassine Bounou, who spread himself to close down the angle.

Morocco, who are ranked 22nd, came closest when Noussair Mazraoui followed in a deflected shot and saw a back-post header saved.

There's been quite a talking point away from the action in Germany's shock 2-1 loss to Japan.

Here's a summary for those of you who want a recap.

Germany players covered their mouths during the team photograph before the match started.

The gesture follows Fifa threatening players with a booking for wearing the "OneLove" armband during games in Qatar.

"It wasn't about making a political statement," said the Germany football federation (DFB) on Twitter.

"Human rights are non-negotiable. That should be taken for granted, but it still isn't the case. That's why this message is so important to us."

Germany were one of the teams who had planned to wear the "OneLove" armband, along with England, Wales, Belgium, Denmark, the Netherlands and Switzerland.

Meanwhile, German Interior Minister Nancy Faeser has been wearing the armband while sitting next to Fifa President Gianni Infantino during the Japan match.

Manchester United fan Lord Jim O’Neill says he's not surprised that the Glazers are exploring the option of selling the club.

The economist, who led the Red Knights consortium’s attempt to buy the club in 2010, did not rule out the group reviving its efforts to purchase Man United again.

“Whoever owns Manchester United needs to understand what it isthey’re taking on and the Glazers have not been popular owners for 17 years. If they’ve got the money they’ve got to have some purpose aswell," O'Neill told BBC Radio 4's Today Programme.

He said the Glazer family would like to get £4bn for the sale. Asked whether the Red Knights would be involved again in trying to buy Man United, he said: "Whoever owns Manchester United has to have some culture and purpose behind why they're trying to do it.

Could the consortium find the £4bn? “I’m not sure if it will necessarily be that much, but let’ssee," O'Neill responded.

    "Let's see what happens."

There is a place for Cristiano Ronaldo in Saudi Arabian football following the termination of his contract at Manchester United, according to a Saudi Pro League official.

Salman Namshan, the league's General Operations Manager and also a matchcommissioner for FIFA, was responding to reports Ronaldo received an offer worth the equivalent of £305m to go to Saudi Arabia, but he turned it down.

When asked on BBC Radio 4's Today programme whether that offer could be revised, he said: "I really don't know how much, but the idea of bringing him and others is there."

Namshan added he is 80% confident that this will happen.

And as to whether Saudi Arabia might bid to buy Manchester United from the Glazer family, he responded: "Whatever happens with Saudi Arabia nowadays is not asurprise. Everything is possible."

"You know three back-to-backOlympic medals including a gold. This team really is the team that hasperformed on the world stage, not just got there, but won medals and been onthe podium etc.

"Their success is as much as our success and I think it’simportant to really leverage that and use each other to continue to move thesport forward in our country and continue to fight for the things that matter."

  11. Canada boss Herdman isn't your average boss

    Belgium v Canada (19:00 GMT)

John Herdman admits that, just for a second, he will need to pinch himself when he sends his Canada side out to face Belgium in their first men's World Cup finals game in 36 years.

Taking on the team ranked second in the world, which includes the likes of Kevin de Bruyne, Eden Hazard and Romelu Lukaku, is a tough task, even when your own squad includes Alphonso Davies and Jonathan David, two of the top young talents playing in Europe.

    But consider Herdman's background.

A 47-year-old from the north-east steelmaking town of Consett, with no playing background, who only got into coaching when he took charge of a local under-11 team as part of his Duke of Edinburgh award when he was a teenager and emigrated to New Zealand in his 20s when he realised there was no chance he would be given an opportunity in the professional game in England.

He accepts his unconventional journey brings an element of imposter syndrome. But Herdman doesn't feel it is exclusive to him.

"Everyone suffers with this at some point," he said.

"But I was listening to a podcast where Hugh Jackman spoke about imposter syndrome. I just thought if Wolverine can have it, I can too! I'm not ashamed to admit it and I'm sure I will feel that way when De Bruyne walks past."

  12. Belgium to drop 'love' from away shirts

Belgium will not wear their white away shirts with the word "love" on the collar in the group stage of the World Cup in Qatar following a discussion with Fifa.

It is understood to be part of a commercial dispute.

They plan to wear their red home shirts for the group matches against Canada, Morocco and Croatia.

  13. Dendoncker's upbringing on a pig farm

Aston Villa and Belgium defender Leander Dendoncker, grew up on a pig farm in the Belgian village of Pascchendaele and was grateful for his father’s foresight in converting a patch of land into a football pitch.

“That area was meant to be food for the pigs,” Dendoncker said. “The neighbours told him he was crazy and throwing money away.”

Leander’s younger brother Lars is also a professional footballer, but is currently without a club after being released by Brighton last summer.

  14. Post update

Just to let you all know that Japan have now taken the lead against Germany.

Takuma Asano has made it 2-1, thanks to some rather poor defending.

But will they hang on? There's just over five minutes left of normal time...

  15. 'We can get into the semi-finals'

Spain v Costa Rica (16:00 GMT)

German protest at World Cup, England and Wales updates, Man Utd & Ronaldo (11)

    Cesc Fabregas

Former Spain midfielder on BBC World Football Show

I believe that we can get into the semi-finals, the sameway that we did at the Euros.

We used to have a lot of players fromReal Madrid and Barcelona, from Valencia, Arsenal, Liverpool, top, topteams. Now it’s a little bit more mixed.

You see players from Villarreal, players from Celta Vigo, you see players from all over the league, which isgood and nice to see because that means that the league is growing andpotentially anyone can be called up for the national team.

But at the same timeit gives you that feeling that it’s a bit unexpected. We could be really goodor some players that play in lower teams to play in a World Cup could affectthem mentally or not.

We don’t really know and I haven’t been part of it in thelast few years to know what is in there. But the coach knows exactly what he isdoing, he’s an experienced coach and hopefully the team will do well and wewill be behind them all the way.

  16. 'Obviously I am closer to this being my last World Cup' - Busquets

Spain v Costa Rica (16:00 GMT)

Spain captain Sergio Busquets said he "will not make any decisions" on whether this is his final World Cup.

The Barcelona midfielder is competing in his fourth tournament after winning the trophy with Spain in 2010.

The 34-year-old also won the 2012 European Championship and is "dreaming" of winning another title in Qatar.

"I'm very happy to be here, regardless of whether it's my second or fourth World Cup. I won't make any decisions during or afterwards," said Busquets.

"I am here to enjoy it, whatever happens. Obviously I am closer to this being my last World Cup."

  17. Post update

  19. Mixed reaction as Israeli TV reporter talks to Iranian fans

A correspondent for Israel’s public broadcaster, Kan, got a mixed reception from Iranian fanswhen he tried to interview them before Iran’s match with England on Monday, accordingto a report aired hours later on Kan’s Channel 11.

An encounter with the TV crew from Iran’s arch-enemy brought uneasy responses from someIranians arriving at the stadium.

“Oh my God!” said one woman after Moav Vardi, Kan’s chief international correspondent, introduced himself on camera as a reporter from Israeli television.

“In Iran it is a problem forus,” she said.

Others also declined to be interviewed, walking away from the Vardi’s microphone after he toldthem, “we are from Israel”.

When asked why he could not speak, the man said: “I will be….” and pantomimed a gun-shotto the head.

Vardi got a different response from a couple who he asked: “What do you think about Israel?”

“All of us are human, we are friends together,” said the man, wearing the Iranian colours. “Thepeople don’t have any problems with Israel, America. That’s politics.”

  20. Australia fans celebrate - for a while

    France 4-1 Autralia

Australia's lead against France may have been short-lived, but these fans in Melbourne certainly enjoyed it whilst it lasted.

When Craig Goodwin put the Socceroos ahead in the ninth minute, those watching in the Southern hemisphere may have thought that another World Cup upset was on the cards.

Current trophy holders, France soon put any such notion to bed, however, with a scary display of attacking firepower.

Australia's next Group D match is against Tunisia on Saturday. Perhaps we'll see more scenes like these.
