Creamy Cabbage Casserole is a summertime side dish perfect for that garden fresh cabbage. Chopped cabbage tossed with seasoning and cream then topped with bacon and baked. It’s a quick and easy side dish that’s delicious.

This cabbage casserole recipe is one of the easiest side dishes ever. Five ingredients and one baking dish are all you need to make it and you can have it prepped and ready to go in the oven in about 15 minutes.

It’s cooked in cream and topped with bacon and the flavor combo is perfect. Plus, it goes with so many main dishes!

Easy 5 Ingredient Side Dish!

Cabbage is really sturdy and is perfect for baking! Most of the prep work is chopping it up and then it’s as simple as adding the cream, seasonings, and bacon.

Even though there are only a handful of ingredients the baked cabbage comes out the oven perfectly cooked and with tons of flavor. There’s a hint of mustard powder, the cream and flour create a rich sauce, and the bacon… well it just adds the best texture and savory flavor. I mean, it’s bacon – you already know it’s good!

How to Chop Cabbage

  • Dealing with a whole head of cabbage can be a little awkward to handle so the first thing you want to do is slice it in half.
  • Place one half, sliced-side-down on your cutting board. Slice it into half-moon slices and then lay those flat and cut them into smaller pieces. You will only need half of the head for this recipe, but you can repeat this with the other half and save it for another use or double the recipe.

Once you’ve got the cabbage in the dish the rest is so easy:

  • Sprinkle the flour and mustard powder over the top.
  • Pour the cream over the top.
  • Lay the slices of bacon so they are covering the other ingredients.

  • Once you’ve baked the casserole (it takes about an hour at 350 degrees F) the bacon will have turned nice and crispy on top. To make it easy to serve, I use kitchen scissors to cut the bacon into bite-sized pieces and sprinkle them over the top of the casserole.

Cabbage Casserole

Creamy casserole loaded with fresh cabbage, cream, seasonings and crunchy bacon.

Ingredients

  • 1/2 head cabbage chopped
  • 1 Tbsp flour
  • 2 tsp mustard powder
  • 1 c. heavy cream
  • 8 bacon strips

Instructions

  • Fill a 2 quart casserole dish sprayed with non-stick spray with chopped cabbage. Sprinkle flour and mustard powder over the cabbage. Pour the cream over the mixture. Lay bacon strips over the top.

  • Bake at 350 degrees for 1 hour. Cut strips of bacon with scissors before serving.

    HI Julie,
    This sounds really tasty. I have a question though. In two places, where you’re giving helpful hints about chopping cabbage, you say to cut it in half, explain how to chop it, then say to repeat with the other half, however, the recipe only calls for a half a head of cabbage. I wouldn’t want someone to misread it and think they should be using the whole thing. I think it should read, reserve other half for another use, am I correct?
